Hello!

It seems time passes more quickly each year—we can't believe it's November already. Looks like this has turned into a quarterly newsletter lately but we plan to get it back to bi-monthly next year.

We hope your fall has been as spectacular as ours has been here.  Even past the 'peak color' there is still much to photograph.  The remaining leaves with the dark tree trunks and branches can be beautiful subjects.  The trick is to keep the bright sky out of the image so that it doesn't pull your eye away.  You can also find beautiful fallen leaves, dip them in water, press them against a window, and photograph them from inside with the sun shining through them, giving them a stained glass look.

As we near the holiday season it's time to think about making that list for Santa. After all, we all need to help the economy, right? On the flip side of that, if money is a bit tight, there are ways to share your photography passion and talents with those on your giving list. There are many items that you can make such as calendars, magnets, prints and notecards. If you have time, putting together a book or DVD of old family pictures or any subject that someone enjoys such as flowers or animals is a thoughtful gift. A bonus for you is a big part of the joy of photography is sharing your vision of the world with others.

For those of you who live close by, we will be participating in a holiday gift expo along with a number of other local artists at the Hunter Museum of American Art, here in Chattanooga, on Sunday, December 7 from noon until 5.  This is also a free day at the museum so if you've been putting off visiting the Hunter, this will be the perfect time to do a little holiday shopping and take time to see their wonderful collection of artwork.

Have a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for a new year filled with many beautiful subjects!

Best,

Tom and Pat

 Start an Ongoing Assignment

I have this ongoing project of photographing one tree that is beside our deck in as many conditions and camera settings as possible. It's not great art, but being right outside our door, it's very convenient no matter how busy I am or what the weather is. It has been a great learning experience--not just from a technical perspective, but also from observing the changes that can happen from one day to the next or sometime even one minute to the next.  The other day it was raining and a little foggy.  I took an image, thought it looked a little dark, and decided to put my camera on totally automatic just to see what it would do. The pop up flash fired and reflected on the fog causing it to look much foggier than it really was, a result I hadn't actually thought about but thought was interesting. You learn something every day—often from following through on those "I wonder what would happen if…" thoughts.

Here's the original, the auto, and the auto with a little tweaking in Lightroom.
