Hunt’s Specials for our Readers

Hello!

We hope that your summer is going well. It's hard to believe that it's August already, although, one step out our door reminds you instantly. Wow, it's been hot.

We have just returned from Iceland and we have to say it is right up there with the top places we've ever been. What a variety of subjects with scenery, nesting birds, puffins you could almost touch, waterfalls, black sand beaches, cliffs, glaciers, interesting buildings, you name it. Being an island where most everything has to be imported makes it pretty expensive, but it certainly is a wonderful place and we plan to go back.

As much as we enjoy traveling, we've been reminded how much there also is right around home.  We've been going for walk each evening after things cool down.  One evening we heard this hissing noise and right above our heads was a baby barred owl. Then another hissing noise from a different direction, a second one, and a moment later two full grown owls flew in. Did we have a camera? Of course not.  Each night after that we would listen for the hissing, find them about half the time, and usually just watch, But one night we had taken the camera and this night we saw the mother hop down on the ground, listen for a moment and then she pulled out a small snake which she took up and gave to the baby. It was fairly dark so the images are not going to be hung on our wall, but what an experience.

Other than our Utah/Colorado trip, the remainder of our workshops will be fairly local. We are happy that our Ocoee Whitewater Center workshop will be in October this year which, with a little luck, will put us at fall color time.  We also have a couple of camera club programs coming up soon. Our Photographic Society of Chattanooga program will be about Close-up Photography on August 21st and we'll be in Dalton for the Carpet Capitol Camera Club meeting on September 8.

There will be a Gallery Hop in Chattanooga on September 13. Galleries and individual artists will be participating.  If you are in town, sometime during the afternoon, please drop by Tom's office/studio and see some of his new fine-art work. He's located on the 2nd floor of the Saddlery Building above the Tanner Hill Gallery, 3069 Broad Street.

Our local PBS station joined us for a short workshop a few weeks ago.  That program will be airing locally next winter.  We'll let you know more about that as the date is set.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the summer.  For our local folks trying to escape the heat and still have a good location for some photography, it can be a great time to spend some time at the Tennessee Aquarium.  Later in the afternoon after the crowds have thinned out is a good time to go.

 Best,

Tom and Pat

Report on Canon EF-S 55-250mm Lens

If you are looking for a lightweight travel lens, the new Canon EF-S 55-250mm F/4-F5.6 Image Stabilized lens might just fit the bill. We recently tested this lens in Iceland on the puffins, arctic terns, and skua's and were surprised by the high quality of the images, especially at f/8 and f/11. It is very compact and very light-weight making it a great travel lens. You might want to also purchase the accessory lens hood which is sold separately.

 Manfrotto's 190CXPRO4 Tripod

Our local camera store, Superior Camera, now carries very compact versions of Manfrotto's sturdy but light weight carbon fiber tripods. We particularly like the 190CXPRO4, a four section tripod which will fit in your carry on luggage, a distinct advantage these days. It has a nifty center column which swings to horizontal without being removed from the tripod allowing you to photograph within 3 inches of the ground. There is also a 3 section version which is a little longer, but still a very nice tripod.
