Hello!
And we thought winter was strange…. We are still waiting for the oaks and many other plants to recover from the cold snap last month—it should look more like summer here by now, not like autumn like it does.
The May issue of Outdoor Photographer has an article entitled Workshop Pros Give you their Best Tips. We were happy to be included in the article along with Strabo Tours and some of their other instructors.
We have been enjoying our spring workshop season, renewing old friendships and meeting some great new folks. We are looking forward to our workshop in Wales which will begin next week. There are still a few openings in each of our remaining workshops in Newfoundland, on the Oregon Coast and in Italy. We're really excited about our schedule for 2008 and are close to having the details for most of the locations we have scheduled. We have a new itinerary in Costa Rica (Feb 25-Mar 5)(again with a Panama extension (Mar 5-9)) and have new destinations of Prague/Budapest (May 19-30) and Iceland (July 6-17). We have an interested parties list for each of these locations. If you would like to be added to the list, please let Jacque at Strabo Tours know and we'll send you a brochure shortly.
Summer is a great time for macro photography. We hope that you have an opportunity to get out and enjoy the macro world.
Best, Tom and Pat
Notes from the Field, Edition 7
We are happy to announce the newest revision of our popular instructional book, Notes from the Field. Our book is appropriate for all photographers whether digital or traditional. We have made some significant changes for our digital readers, adding concepts such as digital files, histograms and white balance. We focus on techniques for capturing your images rather than addressing the whole world of digital post processing. With all new images, the book retails for $24.95 plus tax where applicable and $4.50 shipping and can be purchased directly from us. There will soon be an updated order form on our website.
Penguins' Rock, a New Permanent Exhibit at the Tennessee Aquarium
The Tennessee Aquarium is celebrating year 15 with a new permanent exhibit of 10 macaroni and 10 gentoo penguins. It opened yesterday and I was lucky to stumble into the opening ceremonies. The penguins were having a great time swimming around. There are some very nice 'rocks' for them to hop out on as well. These penguins are native to the chilly waters surrounding Antarctica so their habitat is behind glass to keep the temperature cold enough for them to be comfortable. One of the challenges has been to switch them from a Southern hemisphere light cycle to one closer to what we are used to. To see a live web cam of the exhibit and a link to some videos on YouTube go to http://www.tnaqua.org/Animals/Penguins.asp
If you have not been to the TN Aquarium, it offers a lot of other great photo opportunities with the butterfly exhibit, orchids and other tropical plants, turtles, frogs, wood ducks, and of course the fish. It's a favorite destination for school groups this time of year so photography is easiest very early in the morning or late afternoon since that usually allows you to avoid tour groups.
The Aquarium offers Picture the Aquarium workshops each year, a chance to photograph after hours. There are 5 spaces remaining in our July 10th workshop.
